Introduction

Sweet Potato Pie is a timeless Southern dessert that brings warmth, comfort, and rich flavor to every table. Known for its smooth, velvety texture and perfectly balanced spices, this pie is often compared to pumpkin pie—but many would argue it’s even better. Made with naturally sweet, roasted sweet potatoes, warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and a buttery flaky crust, this dessert is a true celebration of simple ingredients transformed into something extraordinary.

This pie has deep roots in Southern cooking and is a staple during holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, but it’s delicious enough to enjoy year-round. The natural sweetness of the potatoes combined with creamy milk and aromatic spices creates a filling that’s both rich and light at the same time. Whether you’re making it for a special gathering or just to satisfy a craving, this recipe is easy to follow and delivers consistent, bakery-quality results.

Ingredients:

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2–3 medium sweet potatoes)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preparation:

Step 1:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Wash, peel, and boil or roast the sweet potatoes until tender. Mash them until smooth with no lumps and allow them to cool slightly.

Step 2:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes with melted butter. Stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Step 3:
Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated and the filling is silky.

Step 4:
Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared pie crust. Smooth the top evenly using a spatula.

Step 5:
Bake in the preheated oven for 50–60 minutes, or until the center is set and a knife inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let the pie cool completely before slicing. NEXT PAGE
