8. Don’t Automatically Treat It as a Weed
Perhaps the most interesting lesson is simply this: not every plant growing in your garden is useless.
Before pulling something out, take a moment to identify it.
If it really is purslane and you know the plant has been grown or harvested safely, it may be edible and useful in the kitchen.
But There’s One Important Warning
Never eat an unidentified plant simply because it looks like purslane.
Some plants can resemble edible species but may be harmful. Plants collected from roadsides, areas treated with pesticides, or places contaminated by animals should also be avoided.
And although purslane can be nutritious, it isn’t a replacement for a balanced diet or medical treatment.
A Garden “Weed” With a Different Story
The next time you spot a low-growing plant with thick, succulent leaves spreading across your garden, don’t immediately reach for the weed remover.
Take a closer look.
It might be purslane—a humble plant that has been used as food for generations and contains a surprisingly interesting mix of nutrients and plant compounds.
Sometimes, the plants we overlook are the ones most worth learning about.
