All you need is a dishwasher tablet! The oven will be like new again

The tablet isn’t magically transforming an oven overnight. Instead, the cleaning solution helps loosen the mess so you don’t have to rely entirely on aggressive scrubbing.

And that is where this method can save time and effort.

What You’ll Need
The beauty of the method is that you don’t need a cupboard full of specialist cleaning products.

For a basic version, you’ll need:

One dishwasher tablet
A heat-resistant bowl or baking dish
Hot water
Oven gloves
A soft sponge or microfiber cloth
A clean cloth for wiping
A small brush or old toothbrush for difficult corners
A bucket or bowl of clean water for rinsing
You may also want some old towels or newspaper to protect the floor in front of the oven.

And, of course, you need a dishwasher tablet.

Before you begin, read the instructions supplied with your oven. If the manufacturer warns against using detergents or particular cleaning methods on the interior surfaces, follow those instructions instead.

First Step: Remove Everything From the Oven
Don’t start cleaning around baking trays, roasting dishes, and oven racks.

Take everything out.

Remove the shelves, trays, racks, pizza stones, thermometers, and anything else that isn’t permanently attached to the oven.

This gives you much better access to the walls and floor.

It also means you won’t accidentally spread greasy cleaning solution onto objects that don’t need it.

If the oven racks are particularly dirty, clean them separately.

A large container or bathtub can be useful for soaking racks, provided the material and finish are suitable for that type of cleaning. You can use warm water and an appropriate detergent, then gently scrub away loosened residue.

Avoid aggressively scraping coated racks because scratches can damage their finish.

Once the oven is empty, remove loose crumbs.

A dry cloth, soft brush, or vacuum cleaner attachment can make this part quick.

There’s no point turning every crumb into wet sludge if you can remove it first.

Second Step: Make Sure the Oven Is Safe to Clean
This is one of the most important parts of the entire process.

The oven should be switched off and sufficiently cool before you begin handling its interior.

Never pour water or cleaning solution directly onto hot electrical components.

You should also be careful around:

Heating elements
Fans
Electrical connections
Light fittings
Temperature sensors
Door seals
Ventilation openings
These components aren’t areas where you want to introduce large amounts of water.

The goal is to clean the appropriate surfaces while keeping electrical and mechanical components dry.

If your oven has a special coating, catalytic liners, steam-cleaning function, or pyrolytic/self-cleaning system, check the manufacturer’s instructions before using any additional cleaning product.

Not every oven should be treated in the same way.

Third Step: Dissolve the Dishwasher Tablet
Now comes the simple part.

Place one dishwasher tablet into a heat-resistant bowl or suitable baking dish.

Add hot water.

You want enough water to create a useful amount of cleaning solution without overflowing the container.

Allow the tablet to dissolve.

Depending on the type of tablet, this may happen quickly or take a little longer.

Do not handle a concentrated detergent solution carelessly. Dishwasher detergent can irritate the skin and eyes, so avoid splashing it and consider wearing household cleaning gloves.

Also remember that dishwasher tablets are designed for use according to their packaging instructions. Using one as an oven-cleaning solution is an alternative household cleaning technique, not necessarily a method endorsed by the tablet manufacturer or your oven manufacturer.

That distinction matters.

Fourth Step: Let the Steam Do Some of the Work
This is the part that makes the method particularly interesting.

Place the heat-resistant container with the water-and-tablet solution inside the oven.

The goal is to create a warm, humid environment that helps soften baked-on residue.

If your oven’s manufacturer permits this type of steam-based cleaning approach, gently heating the oven can help the moisture work on the grime.

However, don’t assume that every oven can safely be used this way.
